Snail Mystery Black Foot
Snail Mystery Black Foot
Black Foot Mystery Snails (Pomacea bridgesii) are calm, freshwater aquarium snails valued for both their appearance and their cleaning abilities. They have dark purple-to-black bodies with attractive striped shells that can range from brown to green or purple hues. Reaching sizes of around 5–6 cm, they are active scavengers that help keep aquariums clean by consuming algae and leftover food. Their gentle nature makes them well suited to community aquariums, and they generally live for about a year under good conditions.
Care and Characteristics
-
Appearance: Recognisable by their dark foot and head, paired with banded shells that vary in colour from brown to green or purple shades.
-
Diet: Mostly herbivorous. They graze on algae and biofilm and will also eat uneaten fish food and soft vegetables such as blanched zucchini or carrots.
-
Tank Conditions: Prefer water temperatures of 20–26 °C and a pH between 7.0 and 8.0. A source of calcium is important to support healthy shell development.
-
Behaviour: Mystery snails frequently travel to the water’s surface to breathe and may occasionally drop back down into the tank.
-
Breeding: Females lay clusters of pink eggs above the waterline, usually attached to the glass or aquarium lid.
These snails are highly sensitive to copper-based medications, which can be lethal. It is also recommended to keep a lid on the aquarium, as they may climb out if given the opportunity.
