Shrimp Riffle (Australatya Striolata)

Shrimp Riffle (Australatya Striolata)

Riffle Shrimp are distinctive freshwater shrimp recognised for their pale yellow to almost transparent bodies, usually marked with a noticeable yellow or white stripe along the back. One of their most interesting features is their fan-shaped front appendages, which they use to filter tiny food particles from the flowing water.

General Information

  • Distribution: Naturally found in shallow creeks and streams throughout eastern Australia.

  • Temperature: Prefer cooler water, ideally 17–23 °C.

  • Adult Size: Grow to around 6 cm in length.

  • Feeding: Primarily filter feeders, capturing microscopic food particles from the water current, though they may also pick up small scraps from the substrate.

  • Sexing: These shrimp begin life as males and typically change to females once they reach around 3–4 cm in size.

Riffle Shrimp can be an interesting addition to a peaceful community aquarium, particularly in tanks with good water flow. However, they may occasionally prey on very small fish fry or baby shrimp. It is best to avoid housing them with large or aggressive fish and to keep water temperatures within their preferred cooler range.
