Rasbora Emerald Eye (Brevibora Dorsiocellata)

Emerald Eye Rasbora (Brevibora dorsiocellata)

The Emerald Eye Rasbora is a sleek, active schooling fish native to the blackwater streams and swamps of Southeast Asia. It is best known for its "headlight" eyes that catch the light in a dark tank, glowing a brilliant green. Their swimming style is synchronized and rhythmic; they are one of the best "true" schoolers among small cyprinids. When kept in a large group against a dark background, they create a sophisticated, high-end look that mimics a natural river stream.

Key Information

  • Common Name: Emerald Eye Rasbora, Eyespot Rasbora

  • Scientific Name: Brevibora dorsiocellata

  • Origin: Southeast Asia (Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand)

  • Max Size: 3.5–4 cm

  • Lifespan: 3–5 years

  • Temperament: Very peaceful and social

  • Diet: Omnivore – Readily accepts high-quality flakes, micro-pellets, and frozen foods like daphnia or cyclops.

  • Care Level: Easy to Moderate

Water Parameters

Parameter Value
Temperature: 22–26°C
pH: 5.0–7.5 (Prefers slightly acidic)
Hardness: 5–12 dGH
Minimum Tank Size: 60L+ (Needs horizontal swimming space)

Behaviour & Tank Compatibility

Emerald Eye Rasboras must be kept in a group of 8–10 or more. Because they are so peaceful and relatively small, they are perfect for community tanks. Ideal tank mates include other peaceful Rasboras, Tetras, Corydoras, and dwarf cichlids like the Neon Blue Acara (while the Acara is small). They are active swimmers and will occupy the upper and middle layers of the tank, adding constant movement to the display.

Ideal Tank Setup

  • Horizontal Space: They are energetic swimmers. A "Long" tank is much better than a "Tall" or cube-shaped tank.

  • Tannins: They look most spectacular in "Blackwater" setups. Adding Catappa leaves or driftwood to tint the water will make their green eyes glow even brighter.

  • Dark Background & Substrate: This is essential to bring out their silver-blue sheen. On a light background, they can look washed out.

  • Moderate Flow: They enjoy a gentle current that mimics their native slow-moving streams.

  • Dense Planting: Like most Rasboras, they feel safest when they have a "wall" of plants to retreat into if startled.
