Cardinal Pyjama (Sphaeramia Nematoptera)

Pajama Cardinalfish (Sphaeramia nematoptera)

The Pajama Cardinalfish, also known as the Spotted Cardinalfish, looks like it was dressed by a committee that couldn't agree on a design. With its yellow face, dark vertical band, and polka-dot "pajama" pants, it is one of the most eccentric-looking fish in the hobby. It is a peaceful, slow-moving species that is perfect for reefers who want a fish that "stays put" and adds a unique silhouette to the mid-water column.

Key Information

  • Common Names: Pajama Cardinal, Spotted Cardinal, Orbiculate Cardinal

  • Scientific Name: Sphaeramia nematoptera

  • Origin: Western Pacific (Indonesia to Fiji)

  • Max Size: 8 cm (approx. 3 inches)

  • Lifespan: 5–8 years

  • Temperament: Very Peaceful

  • Diet: Carnivore – Planktonivore

  • Care Level: Very Easy

Appearance & Identification

The Pajama Cardinal is a masterclass in "mismatched" patterns:

  • The "Pajamas": The rear half of the body is white with large, prominent brownish-red polka dots.

  • The "Waistband": A thick, dark vertical bar separates the front and back of the fish.

  • The Face: A vibrant yellow-to-greenish head with large, expressive orange/red eyes.

  • The Fins: Features a long, elegant first dorsal fin that stands tall like a mast.

Behaviour: The "Floating Ornament"

  • The Hoverer: Unlike the high-energy Melanurus Wrasse, the Pajama Cardinal doesn't race around. It spends most of its time "hovering" in place among rock crevices or branching corals.

  • Nocturnal Origins: Being a Cardinalfish, they are naturally more active at night. However, captive-bred and well-acclimated specimens are perfectly active during the day.

  • Social Structure: They are social fish and look best in small groups (3–5 individuals). Unlike the Banggai Cardinal, which can be aggressive toward its own kind, Pajamas are generally very tolerant of one another.

  • Reef Safe: 100% Reef Safe. They will never bother corals or sessile invertebrates. They might eat very tiny ornamental shrimp larvae, but they generally leave adult shrimp alone.

Ideal Tank Setup

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 75L–115L (20–30 Gallons). Their low-energy lifestyle makes them great for medium-sized tanks.

  • Rockwork: Provide plenty of overhangs and shaded areas. They like to "hang out" in the shadows during the peak of the reef lights.

  • Flow: They prefer low-to-moderate flow. In a high-surge "SPS-heavy" tank, they may struggle to stay in one spot and will look for calmer corners.

  • Feeding: Not picky. They will readily accept frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and high-quality flakes or pellets. Because they are slow, ensure they aren't outcompeted by "piggy" eaters like Tangs.

Why Choose the Pajama Cardinal?

The Pajama Cardinal is for the hobbyist who wants peace and stability. They are hardy, disease-resistant, and provide a sense of calm to a busy tank. They are excellent "dither fish," helping more timid species feel safe enough to come out of hiding.
