Ocellate Damselfish (Pomacentrus vaiuli)

The Ocellate Damselfish, also known as the Princess Damselfish or Vanuatu Damselfish, is one of the most vibrant and visually stunning members of the Pomacentrus genus. Native to the Western Pacific, including the reefs around Indonesia, it is prized for its neon-electric colors. Unlike some of its more aggressive cousins, the Ocellate is considered "moderately" aggressive, making it a viable candidate for community reefs—provided the tank mates are chosen wisely.

Key Information

  • Common Names: Ocellate Damselfish, Princess Damselfish, Ocellated Damsel

  • Scientific Name: Pomacentrus vaiuli

  • Origin: Western Pacific (Indonesia, Philippines, Solomon Islands to Fiji)

  • Max Size: 8–10 cm (approx. 3.5–4 inches)

  • Lifespan: 5–8 years

  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive; territorial of its "home" cave

  • Diet: Omnivore – Opportunistic feeder

  • Care Level: Very Easy

Appearance & Identification

The Princess Damselfish is famous for its glowing, "high-definition" color palette:

  • The Body: Features a brilliant honey-yellow to orange base that blends into a deep purple or neon blue toward the dorsal (top) and posterior (back) sections.

  • The Neon Lines: The head and upper body are covered in thin, electric neon blue horizontal lines and spots that seem to glow under reef lighting.

  • The "Ocellus": Its namesake feature is a distinct black eyespot (ocellus) ringed in blue, located at the back of the dorsal fin. This serves as a "false eye" to confuse predators.

  • Fins: The fins often carry an iridescent blue trim, adding to the fish's jewel-like appearance.

Behaviour & Tank Compatibility

  • Territoriality: Like most damsels, it will claim a specific piece of rockwork as its "castle." It will defend the immediate area around its cave but is generally less likely to chase fish across the entire tank than a Blue Devil or Domino Damsel.

  • Reef Safe: 100% Reef Safe. They are excellent citizens for coral tanks and will not bother polyps, clams, or ornamental shrimp.

  • Social Structure: Best kept singly unless the tank is very large (400L+). Keeping multiples in a small tank will lead to constant fighting.

  • Tank Mates: Excellent with Tangs, Angelfish, Dottybacks, and larger Wrasses. Avoid keeping them with very timid fish like Firefish or small Gobies unless the tank has plenty of hiding spots.

Ideal Tank Setup

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 75L–115L (20–30 Gallons) for a single specimen.

  • Rockwork: Provide plenty of intricate rockwork with multiple small caves. They love to "retreat" into a hole and look out at the tank.

  • Water Quality: They are extremely hardy and can tolerate a range of conditions, but they look their best (and show the brightest neon lines) in stable, high-quality reef water.

  • Hardiness: This is a "bulletproof" fish, making it an ideal choice for beginners or for tanks that may experience occasional fluctuations.

Dietary Needs

They are enthusiastic eaters and will accept almost anything:

  • Diet: Offer a mix of meaty foods (frozen mysis, brine shrimp) and algae-based foods (spirulina flakes or herbivore pellets).

  • Frequency: Feed 1–2 times daily.

  • Color Maintenance: Feeding foods high in vitamins and carotenoids will help maintain the intensity of the orange and purple hues.

Why Choose the Ocellate Damselfish?

The Ocellate Damselfish is for the hobbyist who wants maximum neon color and hardiness without the extreme "terrorist" behavior of other damselfish. It provides a constant spark of movement and brilliant color that can rival much more expensive fish. In an Indonesian reef-themed tank, it is a perfect, authentic addition that brings a "Princess" level of elegance to the rockwork.
