Mimic Tang Juvenile (Acanthurus pyroferus)

The Mimic Tang, also known as the Chocolate Tang or Herald's Tang, is one of the most fascinating "specialists" in the marine world. It is famous for its incredible evolutionary strategy: as a juvenile, it perfectly mimics the appearance of various Dwarf Angelfish (specifically the Lemonpeel or Halfblack Angel) to fool predators into thinking it is a less "tasty" or more aggressive target.

For the hobbyist, this means you get a fish that looks like a delicate Angelfish but has the algae-eating utility of a Tang!

Key Information

  • Common Names: Mimic Tang, Chocolate Tang, Lemonpeel Mimic Tang

  • Scientific Name: Acanthurus pyroferus

  • Origin: Indo-Pacific (Seychelles to the Marquesas, north to Japan)

  • Max Size: 20–25 cm (approx. 8–10 inches)

  • Lifespan: 10–15 years

  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive; generally peaceful for a Tang

  • Diet: Herbivore – Excellent grazer

  • Care Level: Easy to Moderate

The "Master of Disguise" (Juvenile vs. Adult)

The Mimic Tang undergoes a complete transformation that is a joy to watch in the home aquarium:

  • Juvenile Stage: This is what most hobbyists seek. Depending on its region of origin, it will be solid vibrant yellow with a blue ring around the eye (mimicking the Centropyge flavissima or Lemonpeel Angel).

  • Adult Stage: As it matures, it loses its bright yellow "costume" and transforms into a sophisticated dark chocolate brown or charcoal color, often with a beautiful orange-to-yellow highlight around the gill covers and pectoral fins.

  • The "Transition": This usually happens once the fish reaches 3–4 inches. It’s like watching a website go through a "rebranding" or a major CSS update!

Behaviour & Tank Compatibility

  • The Utility Grazer: Like most Acanthurus, it is a workhorse. It spends its day picking at hair algae and film algae on the glass and rocks.

  • Aggression: It is significantly more peaceful than its cousins like the Powder Blue or Achilles Tang. However, it can be territorial toward other Tangs of a similar shape.

  • Reef Safe: 100% Reef Safe. Unlike the actual Angelfish it mimics (which might nip at corals), this Tang will never bother your corals or clams.

  • Compatibility: Excellent with Clownfish, Wrasses, and Anthias. If keeping multiple Tangs, it’s best to add this one early or alongside others to reduce bullying.

Ideal Tank Setup

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 285L (75 Gallons) is required. While they are small as juveniles, they are active swimmers and need space to grow.

  • Rockwork: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing. Ensure there are "swim-throughs" so the fish can dart around when it feels active.

  • Flow: They prefer high-flow environments with plenty of oxygen. A strong powerhead is recommended.

  • Diet: While it will eat frozen foods, its primary diet must be vegetable-based. Provide dried Nori 3–4 times a week and high-quality herbivore pellets.

Why Choose the Mimic Tang?

The Mimic Tang is for the hobbyist who wants the vibrant yellow color of a Yellow Tang or Lemonpeel Angel but wants a fish that is hardy and reef-safe. It is a "double-feature" fish: you get a bright yellow juvenile now and a sophisticated, chocolate-toned adult later.
