Cichlid Jaguar Cichlid (Parachromis Managuensis)

Cichlid Jaguar Cichlid (Parachromis Managuensis)

Jaguar Cichlid (Parachromis managuensis)

The Jaguar Cichlid is a large, predatory, and highly intelligent species native to the lakes and rivers of Central America. As they mature, their coloration transforms from simple dark bars into a beautiful, intricate "leopard" pattern. These fish are famous for their massive mouths and impressive canine teeth, which they use to hunt smaller fish in the wild. In the aquarium, they are known as "wet pets" because they are highly observant of their surroundings and can become very bonded (and occasionally aggressive) toward their keepers.

Water Parameters

Parameter Value
Temperature: 24–28°C
pH: 7.0–8.5
Hardness: 10–20 dGH
Minimum Tank Size: 500L+ for a single adult; 700L+ for a pair

Behaviour & Tank Compatibility

The Jaguar Cichlid is a top-level predator. It is extremely territorial and will defend its space with vigor. They are best kept as a single specimen in a large "display" tank. If you intend to keep them with other fish, the tank must be massive (1000L+) and the tank mates must be equally large and robust, such as Oscars, Midas Cichlids, or large Loricariid Catfish. Never house them with anything that can fit in their mouth, as it will inevitably become a meal.

Ideal Tank Setup

  • Massive Filtration: These are large, messy fish. Over-filtration with a high-capacity canister filter or a sump system is required to maintain water quality.

  • Large Decor: Use heavy driftwood and large rocks. Avoid small ornaments, as a Jaguar Cichlid can easily knock them over or move them.

  • Sand or Fine Gravel: They enjoy digging, especially when preparing to spawn.

  • Secure Lid: Essential. These are powerful swimmers and can jump if startled or while chasing food.

  • Sightline Breaks: Use decor to create "visual barriers" if keeping them with other large fish to help reduce aggression.
