Green Chromis (Chromis Viridis)

Blue-Green Chromis (Chromis viridis)

The Blue-Green Chromis is perhaps the most iconic schooling fish in the marine hobby. Renowned for its shimmering, iridescent scales and peaceful demeanor, it is a staple in reef aquaria of all sizes. While they belong to the Damselfish family, they are the "polite cousins" of the group—lacking the aggressive territoriality of the more common blue or striped damsels.

Key Information

  • Common Names: Green Chromis, Blue-Green Chromis, Blue-Green Damselfish

  • Scientific Name: Chromis viridis

  • Origin: Indo-Pacific (Red Sea to the Line Islands)

  • Max Size: 8–10 cm (approx. 3.5–4 inches)

  • Lifespan: 5–8+ years

  • Temperament: Peaceful; social and active

  • Diet: Omnivore – Primarily a plankton-picker

  • Care Level: Very Easy

Appearance & Identification

The magic of the Green Chromis lies in its light-refracting scales:

  • The Color: Depending on the lighting, the fish can shift from a vibrant apple green to a shimmering sky blue. In natural sunlight, they often appear almost metallic.

  • Body Shape: They have a classic, sleek "oval" shape with a deeply forked tail, built for constant swimming in the open water column.

  • Identifying Mark: They lack any bold stripes or spots, but often have a subtle dark line running from the eye to the snout.

Behaviour & Tank Compatibility

  • The Schooling Instinct: This is one of the few marine fish that truly looks its best in a group. In the wild, they live in massive shoals within Acropora coral heads. In the aquarium, a group of 6 or more will create a beautiful, synchronized swimming display.

  • The "Attrition" Note: While peaceful toward other species, a school of Chromis can sometimes establish a "pecking order." In smaller tanks, the strongest may pick on the weakest until the numbers dwindle. Providing a large space and frequent feedings helps prevent this.

  • Reef Safe: 100% Reef Safe. They are arguably the "safest" reef fish you can buy.

  • Tank Mates: Excellent with almost everything. They act as "dither fish," meaning their active swimming in the open water makes shy fish feel safe enough to come out of hiding.

Ideal Tank Setup

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 115L (30 Gallons) for a small group, but 285L+ (75+ Gallons) is much better to allow for true schooling behavior.

  • Rockwork & Corals: They love to "dive" into the branches of SPS corals (like Acropora) when startled. If you don't have live corals, provide rockwork with many small, tight crevices.

  • Water Flow: They thrive in moderate to high flow. They are built to swim against the currents of the reef crest.

  • Lid: They are active and can be jumpy if a larger fish chases them. A secure lid is recommended.

Dietary Needs

Chromis have high metabolisms because they never stop moving:

  • Feeding Frequency: Ideally feed 3 times a day in small amounts.

  • Preferred Foods: They are not picky. They love frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood.

  • Dry Foods: They readily accept high-quality flakes and small pellets.

Why Choose the Blue-Green Chromis?

The Green Chromis is for the hobbyist who wants constant motion and a natural "reef" look. They are incredibly hardy, affordable, and provide a shimmering color that changes throughout the day as they move under your lights. Whether you have a nano reef or a massive 1,000-liter display, a school of Chromis adds a layer of life and energy that few other fish can provide.
