Ram Gold Balloon (Mikrogeophagus Ramirezi)

Ram Gold Balloon (Mikrogeophagus Ramirezi)

Gold Balloon Ram (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi var. "Gold Balloon")

The Gold Balloon Ram is a delightful and interactive dwarf cichlid that adds a brilliant splash of color to any aquarium. It features a solid, vibrant yellow body—often with hints of peach or pink on the face and belly—and striking red eyes. Because of their modified body shape, they have a quirky, waddling swimming style that many hobbyists find endearing. Despite their small size, they possess a surprisingly bold personality and will often follow their keeper's movements outside the tank.

Key Information

  • Common Name: Gold Balloon Ram, Golden Balloon Ram

  • Scientific Name: Mikrogeophagus ramirezi

  • Origin: Selectively bred (Ancestry from the Amazon Basin)

  • Max Size: 4–5 cm

  • Lifespan: 2–3 years

  • Temperament: Peaceful (Territorial only when spawning)

  • Diet: Omnivore – Requires high-quality sinking micro-pellets, flakes, and frozen treats like bloodworms or daphnia.

  • Care Level: Moderate (Sensitive to water quality)

Water Parameters

Parameter Value
Temperature: 26–30°C (Requires high, stable heat)
pH: 5.5–7.0
Hardness: 2–10 dGH
Minimum Tank Size: 40L+

Behaviour & Tank Compatibility

Gold Balloon Rams are social and are best kept in pairs (one male, one female). They are peaceful community members and work well with other calm, heat-tolerant species. Ideal tank mates include Cardinal Tetras, Ember Tetras, Hatchetfish, and Corydoras sterbai. Avoid keeping them with aggressive fish or very fast swimmers that might outcompete them for food, as their rounded bodies make them slightly slower than standard Rams.

Ideal Tank Setup

  • Stable High Temperature: They are "heat lovers." Ensure the water stays consistently above 26.5°C; temperature drops are a leading cause of stress and illness in Rams.

  • Soft Sandy Substrate: Like all Rams, they enjoy sifting through the sand for food particles.

  • Abundant Hiding Spots: Use terracotta pots, coconut caves, and dense planting (Anubias, Java Fern, or Amazon Swords) to provide a sense of security.

  • Pristine Water Quality: They have zero tolerance for ammonia and are highly sensitive to nitrates. Weekly 20–30% water changes are essential.

  • Gentle Filtration: They prefer calm water, so ensure the filter flow is not too turbulent.
