Cichlid Eartheater Sven's (Geophagus Sveni)

Cichlid Eartheater Sven's (Geophagus Sveni)

Sven's Eartheater (Geophagus sveni)

Sven's Eartheater is the "supermodel" of the Eartheater world. Originating from the Rio Tocantins in Brazil, it is prized for its brilliant metallic blue-green scales and bold, horizontal red stripes that run the length of its body. Unlike some other Eartheaters that take years to show color, G. sveni often shows impressive vibrancy even at a younger age. They are graceful, active, and possess the signature long, flowing fin filaments that define a show-quality South American cichlid.

Key Information

  • Common Name: Sven's Eartheater, Sveni

  • Scientific Name: Geophagus sveni

  • Origin: South America (Rio Tocantins, Brazil)

  • Max Size: 20–23 cm

  • Lifespan: 10–15 years

  • Temperament: Peaceful (Very docile)

  • Diet: Omnivore – Requires high-quality sinking pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, and bloodworms.

  • Care Level: Moderate

Water Parameters

Parameter Value
Temperature: 26–30°C
pH: 6.0–7.5
Hardness: 2–12 dGH
Minimum Tank Size: 300L+

Behaviour & Tank Compatibility

Like its relatives, G. sveni is a social species that thrives in groups of 5–8. They are peaceful and spend the majority of their time interacting with the substrate and each other. They are ideal for "Community Cichlid" setups. Ideal tank mates include Angelfish, Severums, Festivums, and larger Tetras like Rummynose or Congo Tetras. Avoid very aggressive tank mates that might damage their spectacular flowing fins.

Ideal Tank Setup

  • Fine Sand Substrate: Non-negotiable. This species is an enthusiastic sifter. Using gravel will prevent their natural behavior and can lead to gill damage.

  • Open Area for Sifting: Ensure the majority of the tank floor is open sand, with decor placed toward the back or sides.

  • Driftwood and Plants: Use vertical driftwood and hardy plants like Anubias or Java Fern (attached to wood) to provide cover.

  • Excellent Water Quality: They are sensitive to nitrates and dissolved organics. Frequent water changes (30% weekly) are essential to keep their colors bright.

  • Pristine Filtration: Because they constantly kick up sand, a high-turnover canister filter is necessary to keep the water clear.
