Silver Dollar Blackberry (Metynnis Sp.)

Blackberry Silver Dollar (Metynnis argenteus var. "Blackberry")

The Blackberry Silver Dollar is a highly sought-after designer variety of the classic Silver Dollar. It is named for the unique, dark pigmentation and "berry-like" spots that develop across its shimmering, disc-shaped body. While they retain the peaceful and schooling nature of their ancestors, their exotic coloration makes them an incredible centerpiece for large, active community tanks. These fish are robust, energetic, and provide a constant flash of dark metallic color as they move in unison.

Water Parameters

Parameter Value
Temperature: 24–28°C
pH: 6.0–7.5
Hardness: 4–15 dGH
Minimum Tank Size: 200L+ (Requires horizontal swimming space)

Behaviour & Tank Compatibility

Blackberry Silver Dollars are obligate schoolers and should be kept in groups of at least 5 or more to ensure they feel secure and display their best colors. They are very peaceful and make excellent tank mates for large, non-aggressive fish like Oscars, larger Cichlids, or large Catfish. However, because they are nervous by nature, avoid housing them with overly aggressive species that might startle them.

Ideal Tank Setup

  • Open Swimming Area: They are active swimmers and need plenty of unobstructed space in the middle of the tank.

  • Plastic or Hardy Plants: Because they are primarily herbivores, they will eat most soft-leaved live plants. Use artificial plants or very hardy species like Anubias and Java Fern.

  • Dim Lighting: They can be skittish; subdued lighting and a dark background will help them feel safe and make their spots more prominent.

  • Tight-Fitting Lid: They are powerful jumpers when startled, so a secure cover is essential.
